Security Policy


CanFURence is all about having fun but of course there need to be some rules in order for the convention to run as smoothly as possible. What it all comes down to is to be courteous and considerate of everyone at CanFURence, whether attendee, volunteer, or staff.

The Code of Conduct supersedes these rules if there are any contradictions between these rules and it.

Please refer to the Weapons Policy in regards to props and costume weapons on whether they are suitable, and whom to contact for peace bonding. In general, if they are real weapons, or look too real, they are prohibited.

 

Consent and Harassment

Consent is an important value at CanFURence.

Convention security is here to make sure that this very important value is upheld and respected by all attendees including volunteers and staff members throughout the duration of the convention.

Harassment or abuse of any convention attendee, volunteer, or staff member will not be tolerated and convention security will intervene in any way deemed necessary.

Consent is the action of wilfully agreeing to an action, whether it is a physical, verbal, emotional or sexual action. It is every attendee’s responsibility to carefully judge whether or not they should consent to something. Consent must be respected by other attendees in any given situation. ‘No’ is the universal safe word. Any action soliciting this safe word from the other party should be immediately stopped.

Anyone that has had their consent violated may report the issue to convention Security (or Operations should a Security member not be found) at their discretion. All details will be kept in the strictest of confidence.

Harassment is any conduct that has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering with an attendee, volunteer, or staff member, that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment; or otherwise negatively affects an enjoyment of the convention.

Harassment denies an individual dignity and respect and may take on different forms. It includes, but is not limited to:

  • Unwelcome verbal, written, or physical conduct that denigrates or shows hostility or aversion toward an individual because of that individual’s race, colour, gender, national origin, religion, age, sexual orientation, civil status or disability (or that of an individual’s relatives, friends, or associates);
  • Unwelcome threats, derogatory comments, jokes, innuendos, insults, slurs, epithets, negative stereotyping, and other similar conduct that relate to race, colour, gender, national origin, religion, age, sexual orientation, or disability; or
  • The placement, dissemination or circulation of any unwelcome written or graphic material (in hard copy or electronic form) that denigrates or shows hostility or aversion toward an individual or group because of race, colour, gender, national origin, religion, age, sexual orientation, or disability.

However, failure to give such notice in no way prevents the CanFURence from taking appropriate corrective and/or disciplinary action against the alleged harasser for his or her behaviour.

Although illustrative, the above summary of prohibited behaviour is not meant to be all inclusive. Rather, any form of inappropriate discriminatory, intimidating, or harassing behaviour by any attendee may subject that individual to a warning, or the revoking of that attendee’s convention badge. This may include barring from any future CanFURence events depending on the severity of the harassment caused to another attendee.

If applicable, CanFURence may pass on any harassment or abuse issues to the Police, and CanFURence staff will cooperate fully with the Police if criminal charges are applied.

Disorderly Conduct

All attendees and staff are guests of the ALT Hotel. During the convention there may be other guests staying. Please be respectful to all guests at all times.

Attendees are allowed to host room parties, but be courteous of other hotel patrons. Please turn any and all music down at 11:00PM (an Ottawa Bylaw) and keep volume to a minimum. Convention Security reserves the right to patrol the room block if any disturbance is made known to the Convention Security team.

CanFURence is a PG convention. No 18+ or adult attire to be worn in the convention space. Security reserves the right to exercise their judgement upon whether something is considered 18+/adult as well as the right to ask an attendee to change their attire to something more suitable. Adult attire may include puppy hoods, babyfur clothing or accessories, latex clothes, collars and leashes.

Please try to keep rude language (expletives, swearing) to a minimum. Any disrespect of other attendees, guests or staff of The ALT Hotel will result in the temporary revoking of your convention badge and removal from the event. The ALT Hotel may also require the removal of an attendee from the hotel itself at their discretion.

Convention Security may inspect any and all Vendor’s displays for anything that is adult in nature and against the Dealer’s Den and Artist’s Alley policy. For further information please consult the Dealer’s Den and Artist’s Alley policy.

No loitering shall occur, but especially in stairwells or hallways as they are access and fire routes that must be kept clear at all times.

Intoxication in any part of the convention space will not be tolerated. You may be escorted out of convention space and to your room if this is deemed necessary. This does not include areas designated for the consumption of alcohol such as the bar or your own hotel room. No alcohol shall be tolerated in the event space. Any member of Convention Security has the right to confiscate any alcoholic beverages upon discovery.

No smoking on the premises of the ALT Hotel. This includes e-cigarettes, vaping, as well as smoking tobacco. Security will ask you to move to the clearly designated areas where smoking is permitted.

Convention Staff Welfare and Security

Convention Security not only ensures the safety of the attendees but also that of any and all CanFURence staff members and volunteers. Staff and volunteers are the backbone of the convention. Ensuring the security and welfare of volunteers and staff has a direct impact to the experience provided to the attendees.

CanFURence staff and attendees are to take at minimum one 2 hours-long break each day. We all wish to work towards a successful convention, but you cannot pour from an empty cup; take care of yourself before caring for the convention.

Convention security advises that staff and volunteers should follow the 6-2-1 rule: at least 6 hours of sleep, at least 2 meals a day and, at least 1 shower a day. This basic guideline should be followed each day of the convention.

Department heads are welcome to make light snacks (ex: chewy bars, muffins, juice boxes etc.) available for their team to eat if need be. Staff and volunteers are allowed to eat light snacks, or food bought at the hotel’s restaurant, within convention space if their work shifts prevents them from eating at regular eating hours (i.e. breakfast, lunch, dinner).

Department heads, staff and volunteers are to report any and all unsafe behaviour in regards to personal safety and welfare to convention security if said behaviour persists during the duration of the convention.

Convention Security’s IC and 2IC reserve the right to revoke the badge of any volunteer, staff member, department head or member of the board of directors, for a minimum of two hours if their behaviour compromises their personal welfare and is so deemed unsafe.

Consec is privileged to have a paramedic amongst its members. Their task as a member of Consec includes providing direct medical assistance to convention attendees, staff members and volunteers.

Convention Security’s paramedic has overall authority in regards to anyone’s personal health and safety. Any instructions given by Convention Security’s paramedic in regards to one’s personal health and safety are to be respected.

Some other staff members have first aid certifications.

 

If you disagree with any decision made by Security team members, you can appeal to the Head and/or the Assistant Head of Security to review the decision made.
