Frequently Asked Questions

At the convention

I require a service animal – can CanFURence accommodate us?

CanFURence Anthropomorphic Events Inc is happy to ensure its events are as accessible as possible.

Service animals are permitted subject to these conditions:

  • Ensure the service animal is readily identifiable as being used by the handler for reasons relating to a disability, for instance by wearing a harness or a vest.  Or present to the registration staff documentation from a regulated health professional attesting that the handler requires a service animal
  • The service animal is only permitted when accompanied at all times by, and under the constant control of, its handler
  • The service animal must be badged at all times while in event space
  • Reasonable efforts are made by the handler to ensure the well-being of the service animal, such as being attentive to signs of distress indicating the service animal may be overwhelmed
  • Notify a CanFURence staff member immediately if the service animal urinates, defecates or vomits in event space.

Other attendees should never pet a service animal without their handler’s permission, and give service animals the space they need to assist their handler.

Remember, for safety reasons only actual (non-sentient) service animals may be leashed to someone else;

What happens if I lose my badge at CanFURence?

It is always a good idea to check with our Lost and Found – check out the FAQ on that.

If at any time your badge is lost, you may request a replacement badge from the Registration Department.

Replacement badges are issued for a reprint fee of $30 for CanFURence events or 20$ for PawPrints events. This fee is refunded if the original badge is found and you present it along with your replacement badge to Registration Staff.

In order to issue a replacement badge, Registration Staff will be required to see your Identification.

I lost something! Where is the lost and found?

All lost and found belongings will be brought back to convention operations (Con Ops).

I bought lunch outside of the hotel. May I bring it into con space?

As an attendee of CanFURence 2017, you are not allowed to bring food bought outside of the hotel. You are allowed to bring in whatever food you bought at the hotel’s restaurant.

Where is ConOps (Convention Operations)?

ConOps is located on the the second floor of the Alt Hotel.  If you are looking for a Staff member, proceed there and look for the sign.  They will also put you in contact with Convention Security members if needed.

Where can I find the Code of Conduct for CanFURence?
I want to publish something about the convention. How do I go about doing so?

If you wish to report at the convention for the purposes of a publication in a newspaper, website, TV show, documentary, online magazine or similar, please read our Media Policy first and then contact us. You will have to contact us well in advance of the convention to obtain media credentials — we will NOT welcome press representatives arriving unannounced. The Media Policy does not apply to attendees who take pictures or video or write con reports for their own personal, non-commercial use.

I lost an item, where could I find it?

We recommend reporting lost items to Convention Operations, also known as Con Ops, in case someone has returned it there and so convention staff can keep an eye for the item.

I am disabled, is the convention accessible?

Canfurence is doing it’s absolute best to ensure our convention is accessible. You should contact us if you have specific security or accessibility concerns. We have a staff member who is the handler of a service dog who is our advocate for accessibility and accommodation who would be happy to assist you.

Dealers Den and Artists Alley

I need assistants for my table, how can I arrange that?

Canfurence allows you to register a maximum of 3 assistants per table (but only 1 for a half table). When you apply for your dealers den table, the application form will ask how many assistants you need. Each assistant you need will cost an additional $50 which gives the assistant an attendee level registration, and any special access to things dealers get (eg: special Saturday meal). Your assistants will have a badge marked “dealer” and will be permitted to enter the dealers den during off hours if necessary.

General

How much does it cost to attend CanFURence?

That really varies.

First, there are different registration levels for all-days admission – attendee, sponsor, patron, and benefactor. Attendee is the least expensive.  Sponsor, patron and benefactor levels include more special treats. There are early-bird discounts on most registration levels, and also single day passes.  You can find the details on the Registration page.

The next big part of your cost may be accommodation. If you’re local to Ottawa, you may prefer to not stay in the hotel. If you’re staying in the hotel, how many days will you want to stay there? Many attendees stay in the hotel Friday and Saturday night – but that does mean that you need to think about what to do with your luggage Friday morning and Sunday afternoon due to the check-in and check-out times. Depending on your budget and time commitments you may consider extending your stay to include Thursday night and/or Sunday night. One way to reduce the cost of your hotel stay is to share a room (and split the cost) with a friend or friends.  There’s more details about the hotel on the Convention Hotel page.

Transportation is another consideration. If you’re local, public transit is an option. If you’re driving there is parking near the Alt Hotel which is free for the weekend, but paid on weekdays. Depending on how far you’re driving, you should consider the cost of fuel. You may find inter-city buses, trains, or airplanes the suitable option if you’re travelling a greater distance. So depending on how you choose to get to CanFURence you’ll need to include those costs too.

Don’t forget the cost of food. Some of the registration levels include a special dinner with them, but not all, and there is still all the rest of your meals. You’ll need to include that cost, and maybe a little more if you might want to go out for an evening with friends.

Last, but by no means the least, include something in your budget to spend with the vendors and artists in our Dealers Den and Artists Alley. We try to include a wide array of temptations for any furry, so don’t forget to include money to support them.

When is CanFURence 2018?

CanFURence 2018 will be hosted from August 3rd to August 5th, 2018.

Join us in 2018 for all the summer fun that CanFURence can offer!

I think I might be a Furry.

Not sure if you’re a furry?

The nice thing about being a furry is if you think you are one, then you are.

There’s no membership card (although we will ask you to pay for a registration to attend CanFURence).

If someone says you’re not a furry unless you’ve got a fursuit – they’re wrong.  You don’t need a fursuit, or ears, or a tail, or handpaws.  If you want them, that’s fine too.

You don’t have to be an artist, or a writer, or a performer.  You don’t have to play games with anthropomorphic characters.  You can be or do any of those, or none of them.

The furry fandom welcomes you, however you choose to participate.

The only thing we ask of you is that you treat others with courtesy, and respect their individuality.

How did CanFURence get its name?

CanFURence was chosen as a nod the first furry conventions in the world which was named ConFurence. We opted to make it Canadian by simply tweaking the name. ConFurence ran from 1989 to 2003. We hope to do our name justice.

Where is the convention being held?

CanFURence 2017 is being held at The Alt Hotel, 185 Slater Street, Ottawa (Ontario) K1P OC8

Please attend our our closing ceremonies on the 12th where we’ll be announcing the details for CanFURence 2018.

Hotel

I only have a single Queen-sized bed in my room but there are three (or four) of us. What should I do?

You may request more towels, more pillows, and more sheets from the hotel, but they are already providing all the cots that they have. While they will try to be good hosts to us, they may not be able to fulfill all of our requests.

So as Lord Baden-Powell would advise, “Be Prepared”!

You should try to bring along your own sleeping arrangements to not be disappointed.

That could be a foam pad, or an air mattress, and a sleeping bag or a duvet.  You may want to add a pillow.

Don’t forget to check with the others that you’ll be sharing the room to see if they have camping gear that they may be able to loan you.

The best option for you depends on what you have, what you can borrow, how much you can spend if you want to purchase something, and also how easy it is to bring with you when you travel to CanFURence.

Hotel, Travel and Area

Where can I park my vehicle?

The closest parking is just across the street from The Alt Hotel – although the entrance to the parking garage is accessed from Laurier.  Have a look here for more info.

Please note that this is a multi-level parking garage, and there are height restriction on the vehicles that may use the facility.

If your vehicle requires a surface lot, check out the “Unenclosed surface lots” section on the City of Ottawa site here. Have a look at the 234-250 Slater St. location in particular.

What is there to do in Ottawa (tourism)?

There is tons to do in Ottawa and the city of Ottawa has a whole website dedicated to all the amazing things to do! Ottawa Tourism has all kinds of ways for you to find neat things to do and visit.

Is there public transportation that I can use to travel to and from the convention?

Ottawa offers OCtranspo and Gatineau has Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) which is a city bus network. There are also many taxi companies who would be happy to assist you as well such as West-Way Taxi, Blueline Taxi, Capital Taxi, DJ’s Taxi and Uber.

I was unable to attend, can you send me my registration package and my convention book?

At this time we are unable to send registration packages, swag, or other items if you are unable to attend the convention.

We apologize

Can I have anything I want for my badge name?

So long as the name you are requesting falls within the guidelines of the Code of Conduct and complies with our strict PG13 convention rating you may choose whatever name you wish.  But there is only so much space on the badge.

Due to limitations on badge sizes, some badge names may require a shortened version of your registered name.

Can I get a specific badge number?

We can only offer specific badge numbers to members of our Benefactor level of registration.

If you would like to select your badge number you can always register for one of these memberships! Bear in mind that the number of Benefactor level registrations is limited, issued on a first-come first-served basis.

Once we are sold out of this membership level they are gone!

I am not comfortable having to give my real name and information. Do I have to?

We’re sorry that you feel that way, but we must insist on this.  We do promise to treat your information with care.

To attend a CanFURence event or convention you must submit your information to register. The Registration staff is dedicated to your privacy.

Your real name, address, date of birth, gender and all other information gathered is kept in the strictest of confidence. This information will not be shared with any other members of the staff of CanFURence unless there is specific legal requirement to do so.

Your comfort is our key, and your privacy matters to us.

What forms of identification do you accept at CanFURence?

To attend a CanFURence convention or event you must present a current and valid photo identification.

This identification must contain a current photograph, date of birth, and address. Valid forms of identification include, but are not limited to, your Passport, Drivers License, Age of Majority card, Provincial health card, Landed Immigrant Card, Tribal Band Card, or other government issued form of identification.

I lost my email with my registration information on it. Can I get the information again?

We would be more than happy to resend you your details. Please email the registration team and we can send you your details again.

I am a minor living away from my parent or guardian, how can I attend?

Like any other minor, we must insist on a completed Minor Consent Form.

If your parent or guardian is not readily available to complete the form, here’s what you need to do.

If you are away from your parents and you have notified them of your intent to attend CanFURence, you can have your consent form signed by any legal Guarantor. Examples of this are Police officers, Judge, Professor, Lawyer, Notary Public or other governmental official.

A form submitted this way must be completed ahead of the convention.  Please email the Registration team a copy of your signed form. This form must also be brought with you to the convention as well.

Do you take payment types other than Paypal?

Yes, for online registrations we will accept other forms of payment such as Interac E-Transfer (Canadians only), cash and cheque.

If you want to pay by one of these alternative payment methods please contact us (select registration as the topic) and we will assist you.

If you are attending another event where we have a booth, you also have the option of paying by debit card, or credit card (although we can’t handle cheques or PayPal at an event).

For 2017, you’ll see us at events including Furnal Equinox, Ottawa Geek Market, CAPE, and What The Fur.

I am a minor, can I attend the convention?

Yes, minors (under 18 on the first day of the event) can attend the convention!

In order to process their registration, minors must present a completed Minor Consent Form that has been signed by a parent, guardian, or equivalent.  This is in addition to the requirement for all attendees that they must present legal identification in order to receive their registration.

All minors 15 years old and younger MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All attendees who are 16 or 17 by the date of the convention may attend without a guardian present.

If a minor attendee is under six years of age they will not be issued a con badge, although the accompanying parent or guardian will have to purchase their own registration. The parent or guardian must provide proof of age of the minor child to be eligible for this policy. These young attendees must be under the direct and constant supervision of their parent or guardian at all times while attending CanFURence.

Please have your identification and Minor Consent form ready as this will allow the registration process to go faster.

There is more information about minors registering and attending the convention on our website.  Have a look here

Do you refund registrations?

We do not offer refunds. Please see our registration policy for further information.

Security

There’s a really loud party/argument happening next door, what can I do about it?

Contact a member of Convention Security at Sec-1 (the Convention Security table), as they will then deal with any issues. You may also find ConSec members throughout the convention floor.  They are the staff members wearing neon orange armbands.

You may also report any disturbance to Convention Operations (Con Ops),  They will convey the information to convention security.

What should I do if I see someone harassing another attendee, or someone is harassing me?

Locate a Convention Security team member. They will be wearing neon orange armbands, and will be present throughout the convention space. If you can’t immediately locate one of the security team members, you can report any form of harassment to Convention Operations (Con Ops).  They will forward that information to Convention Security.

You’re a ConSec member? Good! I need you to stand right here until I come back.

ConSec members are not servants. We are not here to hold your spot at an event for you. We are here to help the attendees, keep them safe, and apply the code of conduct if need be.

Can I leave my bag at Sec-1 (Convention Security Table)? I’ll be right back!

No! Sec-1 is not a coat check! We will not be able to store any items for you at any time.

My friend is working at Sec-1 (Convention Security Table). Is it okay if I sit with him to keep him company?

Sec-1 is a very important part of convention security. Among other things it prevents individuals from ghosting the convention (not paying for their admission) and helps coordinate security operations. If your friend is at the Sec-1 table, you are more than welcome to have a chat, as long as it is done without interfering with his or her work.

Where is ConOps (Convention Operations)?

ConOps is located on the the second floor of the Alt Hotel.  If you are looking for a Staff member, proceed there and look for the sign.  They will also put you in contact with Convention Security members if needed.

Where is Sec-1, the Convention Security table?

Sec-1 is located on the the second floor of the Alt Hotel.  If you are looking for a Security Team member, proceed there and look for the sign.
